Holocaust Memorial Day

On Friday 25th January, two Year 10 students (Samantha Tipler and Lewis Marley) participated in a community service at Folkestone Methodist church in order to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

All secondary schools in the area were invited to participate and, as part of the service, students were required to give readings on different genocides around the theme of ‘Torn from Home’. Lewis and Samantha spoke about the Armenian genocide of 1915-23 and the Anfal genocide of 1988. Both students were exceptional in their delivery, despite their nerves at being the youngest to speak as the other schools brought Sixth Form students.

Following the service we were given the opportunity to place stones on Folkestone’s Holocaust Memorial; a traditional Jewish custom. Please congratulate both if you see them, as they were a credit to the Academy in the way in which they conducted themselves at an important and solemn event.
