Learning All Things Japan

Learning All Things Japan

This term’s topic for Year 5 pupils at the Folkestone Primary Academy has been all about Japan.  The children have been studying the novel, Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo, which partially explores the life of a Japanese WWII soldier.  On Monday 20th October parents of the 9 and 10 year olds were invited in to celebrate what the children had learnt throughout the term.

Pupils were exposed to all things Japanese; including being able to make sushi, paint Japanese words, make origami characters, research Japanese animals using their iPads and paint pictures of Japanese cherry blossom trees.

Miss Tegan Springate, organiser of the event and Year 5 teacher, comments on the day’s activities: “It was a great opportunity for parents to see what their children have been learning this term; specifically the link between our topic (Japan) and the book we have been studying in literacy – Kensuke’s Kingdom.  The event also gave children the experience of trying/tasting something new – sushi is not a Year 5 favourite!”
